ADPCM
Skraćenica za „Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation“. Tehnika za digitalnu kompresiju zvuka koja zahteva manje prostora na disku / memorijskoj kartici od uobičajenog PCM formata koji koriste WAV datoteke.

Alarm reprodukcija
Snimite poruku, a zatim podesite alarm. U zadato vreme diktafon će reprodukovati „bip“ signal – pritisnite bilo koje dugme da biste preslušali snimljenu poruku.

ASCII
Skraćenica za „American Standard Code for Information Interchange“ (izgovara se "Aski"). Uobičajeni binarni kod za ukupno 128 simbola (slova, brojeva, znakova interpunkcije i specijalnih simbola, mada ne i umlauta) koji omogućava prenos podataka između softvera i hardvera. ASCII kod koristi prvih sedam bitova jednog bajta. Prva 32 simbola se koriste kao kontrolni simboli, npr. za kontrolu štampača.

Baud
Jedinica mere koja je dobila ime po francuskom inženjeru Bodou (Baudot). Koristi se za merenje brzine prenosa podataka (1 Baud = 1 bit/sek.). Naprimer, specifikacija „28,800 Bauds” znači da se podaci mogu preneti brzinom od 28,800 bita u sekundi

Binarno
Naziv za sistem brojeva koji se sastoji samo od nula i jedinica (0 i 1). Kao i u decimalnom sistemu, veći brojevi se prave kombinovanjem osnovnih brojeva 0 i 1

BIOS
Skraćenica za „Basic Input / Output System“. Osnovni program računara.

Bit
Binarni broj. Najmanja digitalna jedinica koja može da se nađe u samo dva stanja (0 ili 1). Osam bitova čini jedan bajt.

Bluetooth
Standard za bežičnu komunikaciju između različitih uređaja putem radio talasa, koji su razvile kompanije Ericsson, Intel, IBM, Nokia i Toshiba. Za razliku od infracrvenog prenosa podataka, koji je takođe bežičan, Bluetooth ne zahteva vizuelni kontakt između uređaja. Ovaj protokol radi na frekvenciji od 2.4 GHz i nudi mogućnost prenosa podataka brzinom od 2.1 Mbit/s. U zavisnosti od klase uređaja, domet mu je do 100 metara

bps
Bita u sekundi. Ova oznaka se odnosi na broj bita prenetih u jednoj sekundi. Oznaka bps se obično nalazi na modemima i serijskim interfejsima.

Browser (Pregledač)
Program koji se koristi za pregled i prikaz informacija, na primer na Internetu.

Bug (Greška)
Greška u programu. Otklanja se popravkom ili ponovnim pisanjem programskog koda. Vidi: Patch (Zakrpa)

Bug-Fix
Otklanjanje softverske greške instalacijom specijalnog programa koji sadrži potrebne korekcije (zakrpe).

Byte (Bajt)
Binarni paket podataka sastavljen od 8 bita. Bajt može da predstavi vrednosti između 0 i 255. Može da opiše bilo koji od 256 simbola, brojeva ili boja. Veći broj bajtova se izražava pomoću odgovarajućeg slovnog prefiksa. Tako je:

CD
Kompakt disk. Nosač podataka koji se na tržištu pojavio 1982. Uvođenje kompakt diskova označilo je početak kraja ere analognih nosača zvuka.

CD-R
Skraćenica za Compact Disc Recordable. Kompakt disk na koji se podaci mogu snimati ali ne i brisati. Pored standardne verzije prečnika 12 cm, dostupan je i mini CD od 8 cm.

CD-ROM
Skraćenica za „Compact Disc Read-Only Memory“.Oznaka „Read Only” (samo za čitanje) znači da nije moguć naknadni unos podataka na ovakav medij. CD-ROM može da primi oko 650 ili 700 MB podataka.

CD-RW
Skraćenica za Compact Disc Rewritable. Kompakt disk na koji se podaci mogu ponovo upisivati do1000 puta. Pored standardne verzije prečnika 12cm, dostupan je i mini CD od 8 cm.

CF
Compact Flash. (Compact Flash kartica).

CompactFlash kartica
Memorijska kartica koju je 1994. godine razvila kompanija SanDisk. Za razliku od SmartMedia ili xD-Picture tehnologije, ova vrsta memorijske kartice poseduje ugrađeni kontroler. Novija generacija ovih kartica – CF Type II (CF/2) je debljine 5 mm, dok debljina CF Type I iznosi svega 3.3 mm. (vidi: PCMCIA-Kartice/PC Kartice).

Compatibility (Kompatibilnost)
Sposobnost podataka, programa (softvera) i opreme (hardvera) da radi zajedno. Kompatibilnost omogućava spajanje individualnih komponenti u sistem

Compression (Kompresija)
Programske rutine, odnosno algoritmi, koji uklanjanjem redudantnih (suvišnih) informacija smanjuju broj binarnih cifara u digitalnoj datoteci . Rezultat kompresije je smanjenje veličine datoteke. Na primer, DSS kompresija obezbeđuje efikasnu upotrebu raspoložive memorije.

COM port
 Povezivanje preko Serijskog priključka.

Conf
Režim visoke osetljivosti (označen kao „Conf”) u kojem mikrofon snima zvuk iz svih pravaca, te je, zbog toga, pogodan za snimanje na konferencijama.

Card adapter (Adapter za karticu)
Uređaj u koji se ubacuje memorijska kartica. Služi za povezivanje memorijske kartice sa PC računarom.

CPU
Skraćenica za „Central Processing Unit“. Glavni procesor na PC računaru.

Compression Ratio (Stepen kompresije)

Suprotno od analognog.
Merenje i snimanje neprekidno varirajućih vrednosti elemenata iz fizičkog sveta, kao što je zvuk, svetlo, temperatura, itd., koje odgovaraju vrednostima kao što je napon struje. Ove vrednosti se prebacuju u binarne informacije koje se čuvaju na magnetnim ili optičkim medijima.

Mikrofoni nisu jednako osetljivi na sve vrste zvukova. Frekventni odziv predstavlja odnos između osetljivosti i visine. Referentna vrednost od 0-dB se odnosi na konstantni napon od 1 kHz, a frekventni odziv se meri pri konstantnom nivou pritiska zvuka u rasponu od 20 Hz (najniži) do 20 kHz (iznad gornjeg praga ljudskog sluha).

Softver koji se nalazi u ROM-u i upravlja radom uređaja. Firmver se nalazi u svim kompjuterizovanim proizvodima od fotoaparata do računarskih periferija.

Flash-ROM
Vrsta memorije koja može da sačuva informacije i nakon isključivanja napajanja. Za razliku od konvencionalnih ROM čipova, sadržaj zabeležen u Flash-ROM memoriji može se brisati i ponovo upisivati uz pomoć programiranih električnih impulsa. Zbog toga se može reći da Flash-ROM predstavlja kombinaciju RAM i ROM memorije.

Fleš memorija

File Format (Format datoteke)
Opisuje sadržinu datoteke. Uobičajeni formati su <txt> za tekstualne datoteke, <tif> za datoteke sa slikama i <dss> i <wma> za glasovne datoteke. 

Frekvencija
Broj zvučnih talasa u sekundi. Meri se u Hercima (Hertz - Hz). Niski tonovi imaju nisku frekvenciju i obrnuto, visoki tonovi imaju visoku frekvenciju. Čujni opseg normalne, zdrave mlade osobe se kreće od oko 20 Hz do 20,000 Hz.

Hold (Prekidač "Hold")
Ovaj prekidač zaključava uređaj na trenutno izabranim funkcijama i postavkama. Na primer, u režimu snimanja, prekidač Hold štiti od nehotičnog isključivanja. Kada je uređaj zaustavljen (Stop režim), prekidač Hold ne dozvoljava slučajno uključivanje.

Hot plugging

Integrated Services Digital Network. Digital network for the transmission of voice, data, pictures, etc. between uniformly standardised user interfaces.

International Voice Association. Co-operation between Grundig, Philips and Olympus, which also specified the makeup of the DSS file format.

Memory Card

Miniature Card
A flash memory storage media developed by Intel. Due to their small size (38 mm x 33 mm x 3.5 mm) and their high performance level, miniature cards are especially suitable for portable electronic devices such as digital dictation machines, mobile phones, and hand-held computers.

Microphone Jack
Plug in a microphone or telephone recording device. If purchasing other than Olympus products, check to ensure the microphone meets the specifications required. These are printed in the instructions supplied with the machine.

MiniCards
Small memory cards that are manufactured by Intel (Miniature Cards) or Toshiba (SSFDC).

Miniature Card Reader/Writer
Additional device, including an adapter cable, for an interface which allows for the transmission of speech files saved on miniature cards onto personal computers.

Modem
Artificial word made from modulation and demodulation. A device which transforms digital data into analog signals in order to transmit computer files through a telephone line. A modem is necessary to access the Internet or online services.

Memory effect
A problem with NiCd rechargeable batteries where, if the battery is repeatedly charged when not fully empty, the battery just remembers its capacity when it was "topped up" and not its actual capacity. The result: the battery loses power over time.

MP3
A digital audio compression algorithm that achieves a compression factor of about twelve while preserving sound quality. It does this by optimising the compression according to the range of sound that people can actually hear. MP3 is a very powerful algorithm in a series of audio encoding standards developed under the sponsorship of the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and formalised by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Messaging Application Programming Interface
A messaging architecture and a client interface component for applications such as electronic mail (e-mail), scheduling, calendaring and document management. Ni-Cd battery
Nickel-Cadmium battery. The archetype power tool battery. Due to the Cadmium content this battery must be disposed of safely. Ni-Cd batteries prone to the memory effect which can reduce their voltage with age.

Ni-MH battery
Nickel-Metal Hydride battery. Rechargeable batteries that have an energy density 100% higher than NiCd batteries and can supply high energy levels when required. They are environmentally-friendly (free of cadmium and mercury). Among other devices, Ni-MH are used to power Digital Voice Recorders.

Noise Cancel Function
Recorded audio may be difficult to understand because of noise. This function will reduce the noise in the file for better sound quality.

Online
Describes the state when two or more devices are directly connected and are communicating efficiently. Opposite of offline.

Operating System

This connection allows a computer to execute several tasks simultaneously. A method by which an audio signal is represented as digital data.

PCMCIA
Personal Computer Memory Card International Association. "PC Card"

Phoneme
Smallest unit of speech used to differentiate word meanings from one another, yet without having its own meaning (for example: the h in ‘house’ or the m in ‘mouse’).

Plug and play
Developed by Intel, this standard allows the installation of hardware into a computer without the subsequent need to alter the configuration. This is directly supported by Windows 95 and all newer Windows versions. (USB)

POP3
POP3 is a messaging protocol, Version 3 of the Post Office Protocol. POP3 allows a client computer to retrieve electronic mail from a POP3 Server.

PC Card Adapter
An additional device which makes it possible e.g. to transfer data from a PC card to a computer or laptop.

Power-Save
Standby Mode and Display Shut Off.
If the recorder is stopped or paused for a longer time during recording or playing, it goes into Standby (power-save) mode, and the display shuts off.

Recording Modes
Digital Voice Recorder support different recording modes: HQ (High Quality) mode, SP (Standard Playback) mode and LP (Long Playback) mode. Read Only Memory, used for primary instructions in many Computer Peripherals and CPU's Firmware. Their instructions can be upgraded from a computer for specific types of Flash ROM.

SmartMedia cards are small (45 mm x 37 mm x 0.76 mm) and light (approximately 2 g) storage media. The controller is located in the drive instead of being incorporated in the card to allow simple construction. SmartMedia cards are very affordable and ideal for the storage of digital data like photos, digital speech files and music.

Secure Digital Card
Removable storage media for images and audio files.

Sensitivity
A microphone's output voltage at any given sound pressure level. A more sensitive microphone will sound louder at the same gain setting.

Server
The main computer in a Network responsible for the management / regulation of all other computers.

SHQ
“Stereo High Quality” recording mode.

Tape Counter
A digital tape counter provides a visual indication of your location on the tape. Very handy if needing to where you were or return to a specific part of the recording.

Transmission Control Protocol over Internet Protocol. Standard protocol for sending data packets over the internet or Network. The data is automatically broken up into small packets. An error correction procedure takes place automatically.

Timer recording
Using the timer, you may programme a time for the device to automatically start and stop recording.

USB
USB is an external peripheral --> interface standard for communication between a computer and external peripherals.
It is standard on current operating systems and supports plug and play. USB offers faster data transfers than serial or parallel ports and offers low-speed (1.5 Mbps), full-speed (12 Mbps, or USB 1.1), and high-speed (480 Mbps, or USB 2.0).

USB Audio Class
USB Audio Class compatibility means that the digital voice recorder also functions via the computer as USB microphone or loudspeaker and direct dictation to the PC is also possible.  (USB Audio Class is not supported by operating systems under Windows NT 4.)

USB Mass Storage Class
With USB Mass Storage Class support, the device is automatically displayed as an external drive. It can then be easily accessed in any program as a regular drive. Since most operating systems contain the generic Mass Storage Class driver, the device is recognised without any driver having to be installed. Also called USB Storage Class or USB AutoConnect.

Variable Control Voice Actuator
Variable Control Voice Actuator.
When the microphone senses that sounds have reached a preset volume, the built-in Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) starts recording automatically and stops when the volume drops. Particularly helpful for extended recording, the VCVA not only conserves memory by turning off recording during silent periods, but also makes playback more efficient and convenient.

ViaVoice (IBM)
ViaVoice is a speech recognition Software that makes it possible for a computer to turn human speech into written text.
Speech files recorded in High Quality or Standard Play mode can be used with third-party speech recognition software such as IBM's "ViaVoice", Scansoft´s “Dragon NaturallySpeaking” or   linguatec´s “Voice Pro”.

Voice Pro (linguatec)
“Voice Pro” is a speech recognition software that makes it possible for a computer to turn human speech into written text.
Speech files recorded in High Quality or Standard Play mode can be used with third-party speech recognition software such as linguatec´s “Voice Pro”,   Scansoft´s “Dragon NaturallySpeaking” or IBM's "ViaVoice".

Work Types
Setup the work types in the DSS Player software then download to the digital voice recorder. A work type can then be selected by the author to confirm the type of document dictated, e.g. reports, letters, projects.

Abbreviation for ‘wave’.
Suffix used for audio files saved in Microsoft’s Wave file format.

WAVE
Audio file format developed by Microsoft and used extensively in Microsoft Windows. Conversion tools are available to allow most other operating systems to play .wav files.
